Independent Power in Colorado
CIEA’s members are independent power producers (IPPs) who have been an integral part of Colorado’s energy industry for more than twenty years. There are more than seventy-five independent power projects in Colorado that supply electricity for consumers throughout the region. IPPs have a proven track record for reliability. They produce electricity with clean, efficient natural gas-fired cogeneration and renewable technologies including wind, solar, hydroelectric and biomass.

One megawatt provides enough kilowatt-hours of electricity to serve the annual needs of approximately 1,000 people. Members of CIEA are in the process of supplying more than 3,000 megawatts, to serve the electricity needs of 3.0 million Colorado residents. CIEA members have bid successfully in various RFP’s in Colorado, including those of Xcel Energy and its affiliate, Public Service Company of Colorado, Tri-State G & T and Black Hills Colorado Electric Utility Company.

IPP’s are also referred to as “competitive power suppliers” because they compete for these bids, and they welcome competition in the energy business. CIEA is a state member of the Electric Power Supply Association, the primary national organization for IPP’s and competitive power suppliers in the US.

CIEA members account for nearly 50 percent of the installed generating capacity in Colorado, and provide reliable and competitively priced electricity from environmentally responsible facilities. CIEA seeks to bring the benefits of competition to all power customers. For more information about CIEA, please call 303-297-1970.
